Jazz trumpeter Steven Bernstein has formed the Millennial Territory Orchestra (or MTO), which sports a new name for an old style. MTO follows the style of 1920’s Territory bands, a branch of swing that rose from travelling dance orchestras in the 1920’s. These bands played upbeat, jazzy versions of popular tunes at dance-halls in their local area. MTO does the same thing, but with a broader selection of music. Fresh arrangements of Basie, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, and Prince are showcased on the NPR site below, and well worth the listen. MTO’s first album (MTO:Volume 1) is out now.
